I’m Joana and I’m an artist.
I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but have been living in Southern California with my husband and two kids for many years.
I suppose I’ve always been a maker of things: jewelry, cake decorating, website design, digital scrapbooking kits – I’ve done it all. But never would I have imagined I would paint.
One of my favorite things about painting is color. All of them. Lots of it. The relationship between them, the surprise color combinations, how they can completely change the look and feel of the whole piece.
My process is a very intuitive one. Almost never do I start a painting with an idea of what it’s going to look like in the end. I usually start by making marks, adding color, and moving paint around. For me, most of the fun IS in the unknown, the explorations of new materials and techniques.
After a few layers, I start responding to what’s there – adding new things and letting go of what’s not working. It’s a very freeing process, and even if I do something I don’t like, I can always paint over it. Just like that.
